GPS Technology
Foresight Professional Land Surveys of Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Survey-grade Global Positioning System (GPS) technology is at the heart of most all projects that Foresight engages.
Foresight utilizes GPS technology as a tool to precisely determine the spatial relationship between monumented section corners and other property controlling corners in order to create property boundary determinations.  Foresight also utilizes GPS to establish survey control for construction and topographic mapping projects.

Differential GPS (DGPS) is the process utilized to achieve the high precision that is expected of Professional Surveyors.  DGPS involves multiple survey-grade GPS receivers simultaneously receiving data from common satellites.  Computer processing of the GPS data with sophisticated software results in three-dimensional base lines between the receivers.  The resulting data is then related to a global datum and point positions are generated.

At Foresight, most all of our projects are linked to the North American Datum of 1983.  This is accomplished by linking our GPS measurements to control stations of the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) known as Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS).  CORS are permanent GPS receivers with precisely determined positions.  The data obtained by the CORS receivers is made public by the NGS via the internet and is easily incorporated into a private survey.

In the rugged environment of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, GPS technology has proven to be an incredibly efficient means by which to survey, nearly eliminating the need for traditional line-of-site traversing.  Survey-grade GPS networks include substantial redundancy, lending to statistical analysis and positional certainty.  GPS technology allows Foresight the ability to have all survey projects related to one global datum while maintaining a high degree of precision and efficiency.

The GPS satellite constellation was developed by the United States Department of Defense.  GPS is just one of two Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) currently operational.  Russia also has its own GNSS known as GLONASS.  In a continuing effort to take advantage of cutting-edge technology, Foresight has invested in equipment that also receives data from GLONASS in order to augment GPS.  GLONASS has proven to be a valuable technology in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula where sky obstructions are common.  New and upcoming GNSS constellations are the European Galileo system and the Chinese Compass system.  We at Foresight look forward to implementing these technologies as they become available.
